David DeKok is a journalist in Harrisburg, PA and writes this week about Ken Burn’s documentary “War” with some insights relating to the Santo Thomas internment camp.

He reminds us that at that time the Manila Electric Company was owned by Americans – specifically the Associated Gas & Electric Company of Pennsylvania. The company was incorporated in 1906 and was renamed in 1946 to General Public Utilities Corp. (GPU). DeKok has done research on the history of GPU for an unwritten book.

DeKok notes that “all the white collar workers at Meralco were Americans, many from Reading, Pa.” I find that interesting.
