Simplicity

Just the latest in a whole host of writings related to a similar idea of simplicity or focus or dropping features to enhance effectiveness is this one by Scoble on Apple. Prof. John Maeda of MIT in Cambridge (not Intramuros) has a weblog dedicated to it. Google built an empire on it.

My intent with Asian Energy was to build a niche practice – one focused on the energy market in the Philippines. How much more narrow can you get? Well … a lot more, actually.

As a marketing and advisory principal in Manila with Resource Management International (RMI) and Navigant Consulting, I found it difficult because we represented ourselves as being able to do almost anything in the energy sector. And, quite frankly, our services were broad. But that makes marketing, and sales, (and sometimes delivery performance) difficult – all things to all people.

If you look around this site, you’ll see I’m also spread all over the place. Could you, in a nutshell, regurgitate back what Asian Energy’s strengths are?

In this “long-tail” environment, it is no longer necessary – or effective – to cast a large net.

I welcome comments or push-back or advise, but you might very well start seeing here both a simplification of the website and a more narrow focus on bulk power contracting and trading issues in the Philippine market.

Frankly, the growth area for private sector advisory – based on my perception of both the pent up demand and the emerging enabling structures (for cost recovery) – will be for rate case advisory and assistance at the retail level. My eye remains on that but I’m thinking of a different focus for the next six months.

So, the question still remains: What can I drop, get rid of, kill off to make this a really compelling practice?
