Masinloc Hearings

Well, this should be interesting – if they actually get anybody to appear.

By the way, that same news story refers to Gary Makasiar as a consultant to PSALM.  Surely that’s a journalistic mistake?  You can Google “Makasiar ynn” and gets reams of news reports citing Makasiar variously as “spokesman” for the YNN consortium or “local representative” for them. If it’s not a mistake, the hole gets deeper.

This past December Gary appeared on a panel at the Philippine Economic Society’s Annual meeting as President of Xaddle Point Consultancies.  Here’s his presentation (pdf link) entitled “An Alternative Paradigm for Power Pricing, Economics, and Planning – A Practicioner’s Odyssey).

This is kind of interesting. It says here on the MIESCOR site:

YNN Pacific consortium, one of the proponent in the privatization of NPC 600 MW Masinloc Coal-Fired Power Plant tasked Miescor to provide engineering services by performing technical due diligence report of the power plant. This technical report will be one of the basis in the purchase of the plant.

Miescor, for those that might not know, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Meralco. That’s actually not a bad move by YNN. Miescor would definitely be independent of PSALM – which in this matter (the due diligence assessment) would be quite important.

Update 8-7-06: PSALM subsequently clarified that Makasiar is not a consultant to PSALM.
